Paintingness

This exhibition consists of a series of works in which everyday objects and fragments are sealed inside transparent acrylic boxes. On the surface of each box, a photograph of its contents is affixed̶then scratched, scraped, and partially erased.
While the photograph and the physical object coexist in the same space, the artist’s physical gestures in scratching the surface introduce a tension between image and substance, between record and reality, between surface and interior.
At first glance, these works emit the aura of “painting,” bearing the weight of its long and noble history. Yet in truth, they are nothing more than photographs printed at a convenience store and mundane objects gathered from daily life. This stark contrast between appearance and actuality directly questions the very notion of *paintingness*.
The aesthetic codes of “art-likeness” and “nobility,” shaped over centuries, are here placed in conflict with worthless materials and bare gallery walls. At the moment when these polished surfaces begin to peel away, we are compelled to ask: What is it that we are truly seeing?
By titling the exhibition with the coined word *Paintingness*, the artist traces the superficial sheen of painting and art, only to peel it back and reveal the underlying structures of perception, form, and desire with equal parts irony and reverence.

本展は、透明なアクリルボックスに日常的な物質や断片を封入。その表面に中身を写した写真を貼り、さらにその写真を削る、擦るという操作を施した作品群によって構成されている。
写真と実物が同一空間に配置されながらも、表面に作者の身体性、削れ方の偶然性が介入することで、像と実体、記録と現実、表層と内部のあいだに揺らぎを生み出す。
一見すると芸術という重たい歴史を背負う「絵画」のような存在感を放つこれらの作品は、実際にはコンビニエンスストアで印刷された写真と日常に転がる物体にすぎない。その一見と実在のコントラストは「絵画的であること（paintingness）」そのものを問う。
長い月日をかけて輪郭づけられてきた“アートらしさ”や“高尚さ”。それらが無価値な物質や白い壁の上でせめぎ合い、表層が剥がれかける瞬間に、私たちは本当に何を見ているのか。
“Paintingness”という造語をタイトルに据えるこの展示は、絵画らしさやアートらしさといった“それっぽさ”の皮膜をなぞりながら、その背後にある知覚、構造、欲望の在り処を、皮肉と敬意を持って可視化しようとする姿勢を起点にする。
